The gaseous material is flowiing from\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/images2022\/01aug22\/ch.jpg\">a southern hole<\/a>\u00a0in the sun&#8217;s atmosphere<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SOMETHING FLARE-Y THIS WAY COMES:\u00a0<\/strong>Something just exploded behind the sun&#8217;s northeastern limb. On July 31st at 2309 UT, Earth-orbiting satellites registered a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/images2022\/01aug22\/6hours.jpg\">long-lasting<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/glossary\/flareclasses.html\">C9.3-class<\/a>\u00a0solar flare; the intensity is probably an underestimate because it was partially eclipsed by the edge of the sun. NASA&#8217;s Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) saw hot debris flying away from the blast site:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.spaceweather.com\/images2022\/31jul22\/limbflare_red_strip.gif\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Earth is not in the line of fire. The explosion is significant because it may herald an active region set to emerge over the sun&#8217;s northeastern limb later this week.
