{"id":4181,"date":"2022-08-04T08:25:49","date_gmt":"2022-08-04T11:25:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.summersidearc.com\/?p=4181"},"modified":"2022-08-04T08:39:15","modified_gmt":"2022-08-04T11:39:15","slug":"eruption-proved-continuing-importance-of-shortwave","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.summersidearc.com\/index.php\/2022\/08\/04\/eruption-proved-continuing-importance-of-shortwave\/","title":{"rendered":"Eruption proved continuing importance of shortwave&#8230;."},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Thursday, August 4, 2022<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Public Media Alliance carry an article by Richard Sutherland, Head of News at Radio New Zealand:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In January this year, Tonga\u2019s Hunga Tonga-Hunga Ha\u2019apai submarine volcano exploded.&nbsp; It was the most powerful eruption of its type that the world has seen since Krakatoa in 1883.&nbsp; In addition to sending atmospheric shockwaves around the world, the eruption badly damaged the international high-speed subsea cable connecting Tonga to the rest of the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The island kingdom was cut off \u2013 it was several days before jury-rigged comms were restored.&nbsp; Getting information out of Tonga was next to impossible. But thanks to shortwave, RNZ Pacific was able to broadcast vital information into the country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It may seem strange to be talking about shortwave this far into the 21st century. &nbsp;\u201cShortwave\u201d conjures up images of 1930s-style wood-panelled radios jammed with vacuum tubes, receiving programmes broadcast from colonial capitals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what many dismiss as a legacy distribution platform continues to show its worth even in the age of the internet.
