Basic License Study Group

We are pleased to announce the launch of a weekly Basic Certification study group, meeting Mondays from 7:00–9:00 p.m. at our clubhouse located at 99 Harvard Street in Summerside.

The study group will follow a collaborative format. Participants will independently study one to two topics each week, which will then be reviewed together during the session. Meetings will focus on reinforcing key concepts, addressing questions, and practicing exam-style problems. After approximately 8–10 weeks, participants should be well prepared to sit for the certification exam. There is no cost for the study group, there will be a small fee to cover exam prints.

In addition, the club has a Discord server with a dedicated Basic Course channel for ad hoc questions and discussion.

The course will be based on the following study guide, though purchasing the book is optional. There are several free and paid online training resources available as alternatives:

The first meeting, scheduled for January 30th at 7:00 p.m., will provide an introduction to amateur (HAM) radio and an overview of the course structure. Main topics covered will be:

– Regulations and Policies
– Operating and Procedures
– Station Assembly, Practice and Safety
– Circuit Components
– Basic Electronics and Theory
– Feedlines and Antenna Systems
– Radio Wave Propagation
– Interference and Suppression

There are no age limits or prerequisites for the course, In the past we have had some smart youth pass exams as early as 12 years of age.
